Susan's Story

Susan has served in a variety of roles, including special education teacher, school psychologist, and district-level curriculum specialist for special education. Across each position, she has brought a deep passion and fascination for how individuals learn—often referred to as the Sciences of Learning—and a commitment to applying that knowledge across all areas of education. Special education has provided her the opportunity to research, apply, and assess learning across content areas at the individual student, classroom, and schoolwide levels.

She has a particular passion for literacy, which she believes is the greatest equalizer for all individuals. This belief, paired with her interest in how people learn, drives her work to ensure that instructional practices are grounded in evidence-based research and translated into practical, effective classroom application.

At heart, Susan is still a teacher. She values working alongside educators through coaching and professional learning, recognizing that teachers are often overwhelmed by the many demands placed on them. Susan leverages her love of teaching methods to create supplemental lessons and instructional materials aligned with evidence-based practices—resources teachers can immediately use in their classrooms. She understands that teachers often know what to do but lack the time to create materials, and she sees this work as one meaningful way to support them and help carry part of that load.

In addition to her professional work, Susan served as a board member of The Reading League – South Carolina from January 2024 - February 2026, where she advocated for high-quality, scientifically based reading instruction. Her combined experience in teaching, psychology, curriculum leadership, and literacy advocacy positions her as a respected voice in special education, teaching and learning.

Though she has retired from public education, Susan has much more to give. Through Stephens Learning Solutions, she continues to share her knowledge, serve teachers and educational systems, and make a lasting difference in the lives of children.
